Specialist Programs

Hampstead Primary School offers a range of specialist programs to all students. Our highly skilled specialist teachers are experts in their field and ensure the programs are aligned with the Australian Curriculum and or SACSA as appropriate.

Music, Media, Drama

Every student learns music. Our music resources include a range of musical instruments that students can learn to play.
Our school choir is trained by our music teacher and performs in the local community and at assemblies.
Our Media Studies program includes filmmaking. Students work with a professional filmmaker and our specialist Media teacher to plan, produce and direct short documentary films. Our Senior class were national runners up in a young filmmaker competition in 2012.
All students have weekly drama lessons. These skills are showcased in their short films and at whole school assemblies as well as our Wakakirri performance.

Visual Arts

Our students have one lesson per week of Visual Arts. Our specialist teacher offers a high quality program. Student work is displayed along our fence, around our kitchen garden and was also selected for Robyn Gerhagty’s (local MP) 2012 Christmas Card.

Students from Year 5-7 have the opportunity of participating in the state wide schools Wakakirri story dance competition. Student leaders work closely with our specialist Drama teacher to plan the theme. Participating students learn theatre skills of acting, mime, dance, set design and behind the scenes roles of lighting and prop assistance.

P.E. Skills
Every student learns specific skills for a wide range of sports and athletics. Younger students fine tune skills of throwing, catching, kicking and using bats and racquets. Older students learn the rules of team games from our specialist PE teacher as well as through coaching clinics (basketball, soccer, netball, volleyball and tennis). Swimming lessons are conducted annually at the Payneham Swimming Centre.

Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden
Hampstead Primary School offers the nationally accredited Stephanie Alexander Kitchen garden program. Students from year 3-7 have weekly lessons with our trained Garden Specialist. They learn to plant, grow and harvest seasonal fruit and vegetables in our garden, as well as researching natural solutions to bugs and garden pests.

Every two weeks these students work in our purpose built kitchen with our Kitchen Specialist to prepare healthy meals and snacks using produce from our garden. They learn specific skills of chopping, slicing peeling and cutting as well as using cooktops and ovens safely.

Inquiry Based learning
Every class works with our teacher –librarian each week to develop skills of independent learning. Students have access to a range of technologies to access information globally.

Students learn skills in critical literacy (to confirm accuracy of information) and presentation using a variety of up to date media.
